Show Commentary

A great cast.  A great crew.  A wonderfully put together set that drew gasps of delight every performance, and I haven't even begun to touch on the feindishly concocted devices.

We haven't sorted through our entire list of cast pictures for the short form for normal web posting, but if you want to look at all 100+ photos you can click here.

What can I say about this show other than, it was fun from start to finish.  Thanks to all involved.  Thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy it.   It makes the countless hours of preparation all worth it!

For those of you waiting around to hear.. yes the show is another must see!   People laughed till their sides hurt.   Spontaneous applause errupted for certain events that occured onstage.  All in all, a wonderful show with a great cast.

People often ask us.. "How do you cast these shows so well?"   Though I appreciate the compliment, I must tell you as well, the actors develop their characters so well, that by the time the show starts, you can't imagine anyone else playing that role.

Just two performances left, and there are still lots of good seats.   It's good to see many new faces at the Opera House.   It's also great to see the familiar faces, and I really appreciate all of you who took the time to say hello!

What about the rest of you?   Come see us at the Opera House.   We promise you an evening of entertainment that you'll be smiling about for days to come!

One more run through for us and we are ready for an audience!   The cast and crew have been putting in long hours to put this show together for you.  Lots of technical details, and lots of fun!

It's always at this point in time we sometimes wonder why we do this.   Tomorrow, you get to share in all our work and all the fun.   That in turn, reminds us once again why indeed we spend the time, the effort, and display the devotion we do to the Opera House Players.

We want to continue to be the best, (you'd swear they were professional) amature theater group around.  Again and again, our audiences have honored us with their confirmation.   This show will be no exception.   You may not know this production by name, but you will be amazed by the skill of the actors and the behind the scenes wizards that make this show what it is.  We'll keep a straight face so you don't have to!

A special thanks to Dan Beck and Safariland Taxidermy, along with several of his customers, for their invaluable additions to the set.   You will be amazed at the atmosphere we have created for this production.   Come enjoy the fun!

What can I say but Wow...  I'm excited by what I know this show is about to become.  Yes.. I know there are details to work out and final decisions to be made, but I can see the glint in the eyes of those people working on those details, and I can see what is taking shape as we near the opening for this classic murder mystery spoof.   We spoke with a lot of people, and saw and read several other shows before deciding to do this one.   We made the correct choice.  It has pushed us to the limit in several areas, but we continue to learn new technical skills and grow.

Once again the cast and crew of the OHP proves their skill and versatility with set design, special effects, lighting, sound, choreography and music. Come for the laughter, and enjoy the skill of the artisans that make it all possible.

Less than two weeks until opening and we are turning the corner onto that "frantic" phase of show preparation.  This crew is working hard at getting the special effects to work smoothly, and to turn the Opera House stage into the ultimate weekend lodge.  If you want to get an early glimpse, tickets are still available for Doug Gabriel.  That show will be the first to use the set in performance setting.  I wonder if he has ever performed in such a setting before.

The cast, and yes, the director, have been enjoying this show tremendously.  Now, however, it's time for us to work on those touches that will let you enjoy things as much as we have been.  As I told the cast, it's time for us to begin to take this show seriously, so the audience doesn't have to.  This is a masterly written spoof.  The characters are caricatures.

We are enjoying this show more and more as we work on it.  We're also enjoying the fact that our early work on set is paying off in more productive rehearsals.   Of course, we didn't have much choice in working on the set early.   This production requires a significant number of "fiendishly concocted devices" so while the set may be coming along well, we have lots of fiendish concocting to get done.

What does this mean for you?  This will be a show you'll want to see, so you can figure out "who done it", as the clues (and bodies) pile up.  Where else can you go where "murder" can make you smile?

Where do the days go?!   Lots of things happening with Something's Afoot.   This is going to be a wonderful cast.   We've been spending lots of time on Music, and the more we sing, the more we like the songs.  Lots of fun lyrics and some fun and beautiful melodies.

Our technical people have been hard at work on set and it is coming along well.  We will begin our blocking rehearsals on Thursday and so we will get to use that set right away.

Ticket sales for members begin on Friday February 29th.   We'll be getting notices out to members ASAP.  Sales to the general public begin March 14th.   This show is definitely worth seeing!  It is one that will be talked about for several reasons (which I won't reveal here) for a long time.   Don't be the one that has to say... "I wish I had seen it."

- Weather played havoc with the try-outs, but we had a great turnout on Thursday.  We're still in discussion with a few that couldn't make it on Thursday night, but decisions should be made shortly.   I know the potential cast is excited and so is the production crew.  We're anxious to start on what is going to be a fun romp in terms of rehearsals and performances!   This show is fun from beginning to end.   Give us a few more days and we'll announce the cast.   Seems as though there is some sort of event tomorrow (Feb 3rd) that is going to occupy people's minds for a few hours.   Then we'll be right back at making those tough decisions.

- Tryouts near!   For potential cast members, there is additional information online.  For audience members, don't look at it!  That would be cheating!  I need to give my cast some information about the characters that includes how they die, so they can decide what parts to try out for.    It isn't my intention to ruin the surprise for others.  We're all very excited to present this show.   It has gotten rave reviews from other venues that have performed it.  The technical aspects of the show (the variety of nefarious ways that characters are murdered) are going to be a challenge, but that's what we as the OHP love!   Put on your detective hats, and wait for the clues because - Something's Afoot!

- The fun begins!  Tryouts are scheduled.   January 29th and 31st, 2008 on stage at the Elkader Opera House at 7pm.   There are 10 roles available in this hilarious spoof of all those murder mysteries you love.  Will you make the cut?   Will you be the first one to be murdered?  Who is behind this diabolical plan?  And no... I don't think it's the butler.

- Something's Afoot is a delightful spoof of all the murder mystery books and shows you have come to love, with the added twist that this is a musical.
